Within the municipality of San Pedro Necta, the terrain is quite rugged and the weather extreme, which gives coffee farmers in this area some obstacles to overcome while cultivating and exporting coffee. In efforts to overcome this, 138 indigenous families operating on small farms have established a cooperative called Asociación Para El Desarrollo Integral San Pedro Necta (ASODESI). Each of the members uses their own micro-mill to process their harvest before bringing it to their centralized warehouse to store the dried parchment prior to export. With each farm processing their own coffee, it allows each producer to control the quality closely, meticulously selecting and sorting only the best cherry. Once the dried coffee has arrived in their collective storage facility, they can then move the coffee all together at once along the rough country roads to Guatemala City where it will be prepared for export. Additionally, the collective has worked together to gain access to technical assistance to manage their farms organically. Making their own organic fertilizers creates better yield and quality. These practices contribute to establishing funds for education and healthcare programs to support the members of their community.
